Greetings!

Thanks, Ed, for taking the time to follow this up. I have a photo of
1261 with mangled front end sitting in Palm Garden which I took myself.
I went off to Uncle-Sam's-Canoe-Club in March of 1963 and took the photo
that Fall when home on leave - it is easier to remember now with the
date confirmed.

I knew the operator of 1645 by sight - he said that 1261 looked like a
barn coming at him because one never expects such an occurrance! I
believe that the signal system failed or that is what I heard.

This operator is a very mild-tempered person and not given to flooring
the power pedal, but he is also the operator who pulled a Drake car out
of the barn on Mother's Day in the early 1960s when 1723 went on the
ground at Bon Air Siding outbound. When I got on the car back at SHJ he
had already gone around downtown and was sent out over the 38 and 38A to
Castle Shannon. H mentioned that he did not like moving this fast
because the overhead had expanded considerably on that hot day - which
the heat did to the switch at Bon Air to cause 1723 to derail! But by
the time we got back inbound to Castle Shannon, we were back on the
schedule for 1723!! A very nice ride, especially up truck route 19 at
speed!

> It and 1261 had a head-on somewhere on the 38A on 7-8-63. Both were retired
> as
> a result.

> Was this the one in the cornfield meet with a 1200 on the Dinky Track
> between Mt.Lebanon and Castle Shannon? I thought of that possibility
> but also thought it happened after PAT started operations.

> > Looking at pg.-367 of Lind's book *From Horsecars to Streamliners*
> > about the St. Louis Car Company, a note on Job#-1646 shows that
> > ({[pat]}) did not accept 1645.
>
> > WHY??
