Hello All -
Two cars, a Brooklyn semi-convertible, and a Lake Shore Electric interurban
car, had been acquired by Pittsburgh Historical & Landmarks Foundation for
display at Station Square, the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie terminal redeveloped
as restaurants and shops. Recently, Station Square was acquired by Forest
City Management (of Cleveland). Current plans include redevelopment of the
area where the cars were on display. PHLF & Forest City donated the two
cars to the Pennslyvania Trolley Museum.
As the cars do not fit well with the PTM collection scope, it was agreed
with the donor to trade them to other museums for items that PTM needed
more. The Brooklyn car was traded to the Middlestown & Hummelstown for a
1911 single truck Cincinnati Newport & Covington car (#325). Used in
passenger service until 1946, this car was sold to the Market Frankfort El
in Philly, where it was converted for use as a rail grinder. Retired about
1970, it has been at a number of museum operations in Eastern PA.
The Lake Shore car's carbody was traded to Illinois Railway Museum for track
machinery. The trucks it was sitting on were not for the car - the trucks
were traded to the museum in Rochester for a 1966 Euclid front loader, to be
used in the construction of PTM's track extension, and general maintenance
work.
#325 arrived at PTM on Saturday; all equipment was removed from the Station
Square property yesterday; the trucks arrived in Rochester yesterday at
about 6:00 PM; the loader arrived at PTM at 9:00 this morning. The Lake
Shore carbody should be unloaded in Union IL tomorrow morning, and the track
machinery should be unloaded at PTM Wednesday.
Dan Bower.
