First of all, thanks John. I first rode the Circle Line in 1959 during a stopover in route from Fort Hood to an army assignment in Germany. I also got an opportunity to ride to Chesham on the Metropolitan behind an electric locomotive (from Baker St. to Rickmansworth) and then steam.<br>> <br>> The original concept of the Metropolitan line in London involved steam locomotives pulling trains underground in 1863. The stations were well ventilated but those vent holes have since been bricked up. In this link, there are a whole series of photos of the Underground appearing on the Denver Post website to commemorate the railway's 150th anniversary. The 25th image clearly shows the smoke escape holes or ports in the roof of Baker Street Station (above the station name boards), now converted to lighting galleries.<br>> <br>> Photo 23 Shows the restored engine out of the London Transport Museum in the same station 31 days ago. By the way, even though it is numbered Metropolitan 1, it doesn't date to 1863. No. 12, also named Sarah Siddons after an English actress, was built in 1923 and ran on the Met out to Rickmansworth in regular service until 1961. I was lucky enough to have a cab (footplate) ride in one of those locomotives in 1960.
