Saturn is long gone, John. Production ended three years
ago this month. Mercury is also gone … last car was produced
in January 2011. Remember LLM Motors next to the train station in
Lancaster? That was Lancaster Lincoln Mercury until 2011.
Now it's Lancaster Mitsubishi.

Has a lot to do, I would believe, with
car manufacturers duplicating cars under multiple brand names.
Example … Mercury Zephyr was the same as the Ford Fairmont with just a
slightly higher trim package. In the 1940s and into the 1950s, a
Mercury was a luxury car and the Ford was the cheaper car. GM had
a Chevy, a Pontiac for the kids, an Buick, an Olds and a Caddy … in relative
order. Chrysler had a Plymouth, a Dodge, a DeSoto and a
Chrysler. Eventually each manufacturer blurred the lines and
produced duplicate cars with different names. You had a Dodge Dart
which was the same car as the Plymouth Valiant.

And
they were not the only ones roped into that stupidity. Volkswagens
four-wheel drive Jetta was basically the same as an A3 Audi while a Four
Motion Passat and an Audi A4 were the same car.

I am not familiar
enough with Nissan, Honda, Toyota and the others to know what the duplicates
were.

But I do understand that when the customers money ran out in the
depression of 2009, we had far too many brands and a lot of them had to
disappear. Among those that vanished were Saturn, Pontiac,
Oldsmobile, Mercury and Plymouth. DeSoto had gone in
1961.

Volkswagen and Audi solved the problem by going back to their
roots. They started by taking the Passat off the market for a
year, then they UPsized it to a larger car so that it was no longer on the
same platform as the Audi A4, and then began churning them out of the new
Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. The did precisely the same thing
with the Jetta … but it was downsized back to VW's roots as a small
car. That way they did not have to take anything off the
market.

On Oct 28, 2013, at 6:59 PM, John Swindler

passing out the information on floppy disks or linking them by this new

Obviously someone who was making main frame computers had lobbied heavily to
