To Derrick:

I see my latest message made it to the list
AND the archive. All's
well that ends well, they tell me.

To Dwight
and Fred:

Yes, there were two car barns. The old barn was on Jefferson
Street,
on the block between Walnut and Chestnut Streets. It shows there
on
the 1909 and 1921 Sanborn maps. The new barn was on Ligonier
Street,
across from the brewery. It does not show on the 1921 Sanborn map,
but
is visible on the 1939 aerial photo of Latrobe.

The new car
barn, according to the Google Maps aerial view is now all
gone, apparently
scraped away. I vaguely recall having been there
several years ago and
seeing that part, but not all of the building
had been demolished. It may
have been during that time frame that
Dwight saw it.

See attached
annotated snippet of the 1939 aerial photo from
PennPilot. Light blue line
marks trolley line on Ligonier Street.
Light green turns west at
Ligonier/Depot intersection, then turns onto
Jefferson on its way to the
car barn. I've tinted the car barns pink.
Within my lifetime, West Penn was
using the old barn as a garage and
storage building at their Latrobe
substation.

The Westmoreland County Railway also got in the act in
downtown
Latrobe, but I'll not presume to add a line for that based only on
my
memory of previous discussion here.

--
Bob Netzlof a/k/a
