freight handlers went out on strike and rather than negotiate, Fred Coen just
shut the whole thing (freight operation) down. C&LE tried to
salvage the Cleveland business by interlining with Norwalk, but the latter could
not maintain the schedules that LSE had done routinely, and the business dried
up for C&LE, thus prompting the abandonment of their Springfield-Toledo line
later that year (Coen axed the freight operation in May). </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face="Century Gothic"></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face="Century Gothic">So, while it is true that Norwalk was the
successor to (at least some of) LSE's freight operation, they were not the
immediate cause of its demise.</FONT></DIV>

working the night shift for a local trucking company (Norwalk Truck Lines …
the outfit that wiped out Lake Shore Electric's freight business) so I was
sleeping when it happened. Television was off. The
Turkey Hill ice cream route man came to the door and told us.

real memories go back to Harry Truman and I was living during Roosevelt's last
