I remember seeing them used during fires in downtown Pittsburgh in the 1950's. They were also used in Chicago....including on the last day for trolleys in 1958.<BR></DIV>

<DIV><BR></DIV>Nearly every morning I bicycle from the level of Carson St to Arlington<BR>Avenue near the old carline loop for exercise, then along the ridgeline for<BR>a bit depending on how much time I have.<BR>
<DIV><BR></DIV>The street was open for a dozen feet on the outbound side for some sort of<BR>utility repair work, a couple blocks outbound of 18th St. Looks like there<BR>is still rail under the asphalt. It's now covered with fresh asphalt.<BR>
<DIV><BR></DIV>(and an aside, if you saw the viral photo with the ridiculous firehose<BR>ramps placed on railroad rails, I get the same laugh every morning when I<BR>bike over a metal plate covering rails on Warrington Avenue. I suppose the<BR>Port Authority knows it's there as the paint on it indicates it's their<BR>plate.<BR>
