I rode on it last Saturday. It was built as the Studebaker Building, home to the Studebaker Carriage Company. Manufacturing of the carriages was on the upper floors, showrooms on the lower floor. They later moved to South Bend, where they built cars. Very interesting building to visit, with many nice architectural features. Frank Lloyd Wright had a studio there. Also home to the now closed Studebaker Theater. The bidding process for the Trolleyville USA collection being sold off by successor Lake Shore Electric Railway Museum is proving to be a lively one. Museum director Gary Brookins, the son of founder Gerald E. Brookins, said 35 museums viewed the equipment during a public inspection in late August and bids have begun to roll in. Likewise, the Lorain County (Ohio) Port Authority , which has incorporated a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit to operate a tourist railway linking its Lake Erie waterfront with its downtown business district, expects to bid for a number of cars, especially those with a Cleveland or Ohio connection. "It's quite a neat collection," said Tom Brown, Lorain County Port Authority director, who said he would like to acquire as much of the collection as financial backers will allow, without being specific. "We're just trying to get our track up and running. We've been at it too long (seven years) and we've got to get something so that people can see them, feel them and hear them." Brown said Lorain County officials have visited the Kenosha Electric Ry., among other properties, and plan a line based on the Kenosha model. (Racine Journal-Times) Message-ID: --- In Rails-of-Milwaukee at yahoogroups.com, "LouRugani" wrote: RACINE - Bernie Hoff, 59, of Racine, said she and her family enjoyed the comforts of commuter rail when they were living in a Chicago suburb 24 years ago before they moved to Racine. "We saw commuter rail is such an asset to the area," said Hoff, who was at a transit forum Wednesday night. "We can't understand why they don't have it here." More than 130 people attended the community forum "Tapping into Transit as a Game-Changer" Wednesday night at the DeKoven Center, 600 21st St. The forum, hosted by Racine Transit Task Force and Transit NOW, highlighted the benefits of public transit and specifics of the Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee commuter rail project. The Task Force is a group working to improve transit for Racine. Different community leaders appealed on the behalf of the community, businesses, labor unions and students for a public transit system. Mayor John Dickert, one of the speakers, stressed the importance for interconnectivity of commuter rail, high-speed rail and buses to work together to move Racine forward. He addressed concerns about how much the commuter rail project would cost and pointed out putting in another lane in I-94 is costing $1 billion. "We can keep putting lanes in I-94 or we can look at regional transit that provides ease of movement for people and opportunities for everyone," Dickert said, adding commuter rail would not only bring in infrastructure but also take people off highways, reducing congestion. Kerry Thomas, executive director of Transit NOW, said a public transit system would link people with jobs, spur development and economic growth and enhance quality of life. Transit NOW is a nonprofit organization focusing on transportation related issues and impact in southeastern Wisconsin. She said the transit system linking Milwaukee and Racine to the Kenosha-Chicago rail would create nearly 4,000 construction jobs for the KRM commuter rail, support and create about 71,000 jobs near train stations and ultimately provide access to one million jobs within a mile of the corridor. "It would link Racine to a marketplace of about two million people," Thomas said. "They would have access to Downtown Racine that they don't have right now and it would generate a lot of tourism dollars." Ken Yunker, executive director of the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, estimated commuter rail would cut travel time from Downtown Milwaukee to Downtown Kenosha by about half an hour or more, as compared to riding a bus. Advocates also talked about the additional cultural and entertainment venues that would be available for Racine residents. Hoff agreed. She said her family, before they moved, used to take the train to the museums in downtown Chicago and would not worry about traffic. Her husband, Doug, said he liked the accessibility the public transit system would provide. "It would widen your horizons without feeling like having to move," he said. For those looking for jobs and the commuters, the train would be an easy daily solution, though he added they would need to make sure there are parking spots available around train stations. The Southeastern Regional Transit Authority was formed during the last budget session to oversee the KRM commuter rail project and manage its operations and costs. In September Gov. Jim Doyle laid out a framework for how to integrate buses and commuter rail. A comprehensive regional transit bill is expected to be introduced in the Legislature soon. --- End forwarded message --- From x779 at webtv.net Sat Oct 10 17:15:40 2009 From: x779 at webtv.net (LouRugani) Date: Sat, 10 Oct 2009 21:15:40 -0000 Subject: [milwaukee-electric] Fwd: Milwaukee Streetcar t-shirts announced: Message-ID: http://store.urbanmilwaukee.com/t-shirts/milwaukee-streetcar-t-shirt.html From lallan45 at gmail.com Sun Oct 18 01:34:38 2009 From: lallan45 at gmail.com (Larry Allan) Date: Sun, 18 Oct 2009 00:34:38 -0500 Subject: [milwaukee-electric] Re: Photos of Devil's Teapot Washout 1917 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Attached are the photos, enjoy. The officer went easy on him but told him he would be taken to jail the next time. He also has photos from circa 1972 of the Rapid Transit right of way, taken from the Wauwatosa water tower. He attended Wisconsin Lutheran High School. I'll try to call him and see if he still has the slides. He works for the CSX and lives in Maryland these days. Historically, they obtained some standard (of the day) flat cars, which were converted and revised as time wore on. Obviously, they added a round end to the square end sill, for the purpose of making these cars able to acutally train (with flats) through the streets of Milwaukee. Remember that the Cold Spring Shops was built in 1913 as, KK was no longer able to keep up with street railway expansion. KK had been the original heavy duty shop up to that time. Whereas CSS was only connected to the street railway lines and to the CM&StP railway, the ability to negotiate the system required that all cars be able go around the 90* corners. To view how this was done, find the TMER&L E 58 flat car which was at East Troy and is now at IRM, if my information is correct. Looking underneath the car ends, you will see how TM applied the round ends and coupler mountings. Then again, someone may have photos of this car laying on its back at East Troy's Phantom Woods yard. If so, please post same. Now, the photo of a work car at the Devil's Tea Pot, may well have been one of these RR flat cars that had been motorized with a small cab on each end. A careful look at this car impresses me as on of those early and cheap conversions. The original square end with poling sockets seems to be in that photo. That car would have been an early D series work motor. If anyone has a sharp photo image, please enlarge to see if I'm correct in my conclusion. I recall seeing this wooden car resting directly on the ground at Phantom Woods decades ago and wondering why that was being allowed. ======= On a positive note, "The Trolley at East Troy" in all its six segments is attracting a lot of viewer interest on YouTube, much more so than it did even at East Troy over the late 1980s-1990s-early 2000s. The ETER through all those 20 years had the rights to sell it, and didn't. -----Original Message----- From: Ken and Tracie Sent: Thursday, October 22, 2009 4:20 AM To: milwaukee-electric at lists.dementia.org Subject: [milwaukee-electric] Green Bay 103 I see Green Bay interurban body #103 was recently scrapped. Three buildings are shown, belonging to the Carnation Milk Company (Can Factory, Power House and Milk Factory). The CMStP&P connection ends at the east end, west side of Concord Street, with direct and continuing trackage under wire. The interchange track does run southwestward, entering 2nd street where it parallels the single track TM mainline to a point just east of Park Street. At this point, the interchange track enters the TM mailine There are two tracks west ending at Park Street. The north track splits in two tracks at the west end of the Power House building. An apparent loading platform is shown south of the middle track and lies between this middle track and the south track. That location is south of the Can Factory. So, actually, three tracks stub end at Park Street. Of note is that the TM overhead wire ends, on the west side of Concord Street. Unfortunately, the url for the map, doesn't work. Therefore, my extensive explanation Don L.
