Message-ID: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is seeking public input about the future of rail in Wisconsin. Responses to an online questionnaire will contribute to development of policies and recommendations for the Wisconsin Rail Plan 2030, the state's long-range plan focused on freight, intercity passenger and commuter rail transportation, the DOT said in a press release. The questionnaire seeks opinions on the issues affecting each mode of rail transportation and the future level of state-funded investment. Looking over a photo of Speedrail, I noticed that there were two tracks south of the ROW crossing Eighth Street. Were these tracks used to park equipment? Also, there was a grainy picture in a Milwaukee Journal article from 1980 that showed the entrance to the ill-fated subway east of Eighth Street below where those two tracks were at grade. Was that "hole" filled in at some point? And yet another question... If Maeder did not run that signal leading to the Speedrail crash, what different could have happened downtown as a result? If Speedrail managed to financially limp along for a few extra years, the downtown expressway would have used Highland for its ROW--the tentative path chosen for the freeway during the mid to late 1940s. That might have made the Speedrail ROW still available for use today, instead of the Marquette Interchange altering all that downtown real estate. -- Gary Schnabl Southwest Detroit, two miles NORTH! of Canada--Windsor, that is... Interesting to watch the video on the Market Street Railway web page. On its website, MSR has an article, photos and very interesting video entitled "56 Hours", illustrating the 56-hour project of replacing track on Church Street at 18th in San Francisco, where the line leaves the street and enters PROW in Dolores Park. It's an extremely interesting view of the way track replacement is done these days. http://streetcar.org/
