If I may step aside from the ongoing discussion for a moment...

In 1964, one of PAT's arguments for a single transit system in Allegheny
County was that it would eliminate the visual confusion of the 2-1/2
dozen paint schemes of the former provate transit companies, and replace
them with one unified paint scheme (PAT's).  After the Mod Desire car and
numerous two-color variations of PAT's vertical paint scheme in the early
1970's, I always thought it was ironic that the system was reverting to
the pre-1964 street scene.
