"Between 6 a.m. and midnight 1,825 street cars are scheduled
through the Mt. Washington tunnel of the Pittsburgh Railways."

Don't know if that is one way for a total of 3,650 both
directions or if the 1,825 is a total for inbound and outbound, but that
works out to be almost 1.7 streetcars p-e-r m-i-n-u-t-e o-n
a-v-e-r-a-g-e!!!!!!! Imagine what this must have looked like in the rush
hours!

The article goes on to say:

"At the south portal of the tunnel is a wye junction, which is
the most important on the entire system. . . Adjacent to the wye is the
South Hills administrative building of the company, from which all
service for the South Side local routes originates, . . . Together with
these conditions, the topography and the density of service, together
with lack of convenient rerouting facilities make this location highly
important. It also necessitates a special means of route interlocking
for the protection of conflicting movements."

Power and Incline Division, Pittsburgh Railways.
