It was a dance hall rather than a roller rink.

Perhaps there confusion here between West Liberty Avenue and Liberty
Avenue?

Liberty Avenue extends from downtown toward East Liberty. From wence
commeth the name? It is my understanding that liberties were free
grazing areas for livestock ... I believe there were at least two and
maybe more. The eastern liberty is honored in the name East Liberty, a
section of the City of Pittsburgh. Whether Liberty Avenue was so named
or because it reflects a lack of enslavement, I don't know.

I have asked many people about the location of West Liberty and I often
get blank stares ... Some of the better minds (and this requires the
time to look at old maps of the city) claim it was in the area around
Palm Garden, and the intersection of Saw Mill Run Blvd. and West Liberty
Avenue ... somewhere close to the south end of the Liberty Tubes.
Apparently West Liberty Avenue, which extends southward from the tunnel
portal through Dormont and on to Mount Lebanon, and which eventually
becomes Washington Road, was named after the grazing lands. Trolley
routes 38 Mount Lebanon and 39 Brookline ran on West Liberty Avenue.

And Palm Garden? Most of us remember Palm Garden Loop at the south end
of the South Hills caryard. Ed Lybarger has found a very nice old
postcard that shows a roller skating rink on the hill above the south
end of the car yard ... the letters PALM GARDEN were painted on the roof
of that building.

"West Liberty". Liberty Avenue goes east, to East Liberty basically, and
the other end is downtown.
