Old PRCo route numbers (was: Route 9, 8, PHB&NC)

The cars bore colored markers and metal signs featuring the names of the
destinations, all for the "convenience" of the public (which WILL be
damned!).  No numbers were apparent, since they were for internal use!

Wow, that's news to me! I had thought perhaps the scheme was a
provisional one invented by Arnold, even though there is no indication of
this
in the report.

Did the cars bear the numbers? If not, how did the public make use of them?
