Greetings to all on the list,
I'm a new subscriber...signed on as a result of finding out
about this list from a small [2 or 3 people] western PA trolley
list I started a week or so ago at onelist.com.
Though I've been living in southern Maine [about ten miles
from the Seashore Trolley Museum] for the last 36 years, my
roots are in Pittsburgh - Wilkinsburg High ['58], Carnegie Tech's
drama department, and Pitt ['63]. My father [Frederick William
Rotthoff, Jr.]worked for Pittsburgh Railways [motorman & bus
driver] from about 1943 or 1944 until he retired in the late 1970's.
Plus, I commuted for five years to college and to work on the Blvd.
of the Allies by bus or [usually] trolley. Thus I do have more than a
passing experience with the operation.
The person who pointed me toward this list mentioned that there have
been a lot of questions concerning 78 - Laketon Road in the last week
or so. Perhaps I can help. Dad ran that route quite a bit in the roughly 1949
to 1953 [or thereabouts] time frame, and we used to live at 1425 Montier
Street, which meant the trolley ran right past the front door of our apartment.
Actually, Dad used to park the trolley right in the middle of the street and
come in to the apartment for his lunch break. Somehow, I can't see someone
working for PAT pulling this one off today.
I'd especially enjoy hearing from any old-time employee who
might have known Dad from work.
