Rather than admit this has gone on long enough; I know of at least one
person who didn't want to have his name on a a print. Bill Watts
transferred his 1928-1940 negatives to other interests before World War II.
Because he didn't have them, he didn't want to be bothered by mail from
people wanting prints. My solution was a large rubber stamp that reads
"WILLIAM H WATTS II PHOTOGRAPH, Negative in Collection of Fred W. Schneider
III" Still Watts was in the larger and bolder type. I've also known a
collector of hundreds of thousands of prints and negatives who didn't like
his name out there as a railfan because he worked in the industry. I think,
had I worked for PAT in the middle 1960s, I would have also gone under
cover. I think these are legitimate reasons, and they were reasons used by
the actual photographers and not by someone who simply bought the print or
negative.
