Should one look at the car assignment lists, you will not that half of the
1700 interurbans were assigned to Charleroi and Tylerdale as were crewmen to
operate them. The 1600s and the other 1700s were at Tunnel. Deadheading?
Who in their right mind would pay to deadhead a man than far? There was an
exception. Remember that Tylerdale Carhouse closed on the same day as
Charleroi barn closed. Charleroi, Donora, and the remaining Washington city
lines quit at that time. The Washington Division crew lists were abolished
because there was no longer a division office in downtown Washington.
Therefore, throughout July and August 1953, cars were indeed deadheaded from
Washington to Tunnel barn at the end of the day, and down in the morning to
start the day ... I suspect at that time there was at least one car on the
line all night, and perhaps more. The company was known to move deadhead
cars to the shops at night also if the car needed to go and a man was
available and willing.
