Going to take a guess and go with (a).
Another security device, or deterrent, was screen mesh over the windows
on both sides of the car. From what I can remember, there was a barred
"pay window" located at the partition on the rear platform between the
entry/exit doors.

Anyway, I'm sure Mr. Lybarger has the correct and 'final" answer to this
interesting bit of trivia.
