Yup, it was your mention of that guide that prompted my question.

Something about the wording in the map suggests that it was
revised shortly after the inauguration of the Mt. Washington bus. I'll
hazard the guess that, whether official or only the mapmaker's
device, the letters A through O represent the chronological order of
establishment of bus lines. Here is a list (the numbers in
parentheses are from the PRCo Transit Guide ca.1950; who wants
to bet that they are the same as those in the 1937 guide)

A - Wilkinsburg (through bus 1) (via Wilkins Ave)
B - East Liberty (via Bigelow, Baum)
 C - Squirrel Hill (through bus 3)
D - Highland Park (through bus 19) (via Bigelow, Friendship)
E - Dormont - Mt. Lebanon (through bus 8) (via W. Liberty Tunnel)
 F - McKees Rocks - North Side (102)
G - Shadyside (through bus 2) (via Bigelow)
H - Charleroi (via W. Liberty Tunnel, Saw Mill Run Blvd)
I - Bellevue (through bus 11) (via Brighton, Shadeland, California,
Teece Ave; #11 continued on to Ben Avon)
J - Oakmont - Verona (via East Liberty; same route as K to
Verona Ave.)
K - Frankstown Road (through bus 13) (via Bigelow, Baum, East
Liberty)
L - Castle Shannon (through bus 16) (via W. Liberty, Mt. Lebanon,
Castle Shannon Blvd)
 M - no such service
N - McKeesport (through bus 18) (via Schenley Park, Homestead,
Munhall, Lincoln Place)
O - Mount Washington Streetcar Connecting bus (200)
