Greetings!
A 1994-Dec-11 article in the *Pittsburgh Post Gazette* by Bob Robertson
was entitled "Tracking Down Fond Memories of Trolleys."
The opening three paragraphs read, and I quote:
"It has been more than 40-years since orange street cars made their way
through traffic in Washington, or red-and-white streamlined models
streaked across the countryside to Pittsburgh and back."
"But the men who operated these now-quaint symbols of another time
formed an organization aimed at keeping the memories alive."
"The Street Car Men's Association has gather once a year for more than
four decades, usually in October. But the membership has gradually
dwindled."
Ted Lockman is one of three operators in the accompanying picture and
is one I remember, I believe, and was also known by John, No? And it
was interesting to note that there were 23-operators for this particular
meeting!
They first met at the Auld Hotel on South Main (destroyed by fire in
the 1960s), then Carmen's Lounge on East Maiden, but since the 1970s
they have met at the Ramada Inn on West Chestnut.
Another quote::
"Lockman . . . said: 'You were supposed to take three minutes going
through the South Hills tunnel and a minute to cross the Smithfield
Street bridge.'"
