Anything is possible.  If you are asking did they?  That I don't know.  I've seen
instances where "railroad weave rattan" lasted 100 years.  I've also seen examples
where individual reeds or straws broke in a far shorter interval, then had to be
replaced because it tore clothing.  Best answer is they probably did not do
anything without a sound economic reason.
