I was on that January 28, 1967 car which, as far as I know, ran only
around the loop tracks in downtown Wilkinsburg to give the local people a
last chance to ride a trolley in Wilkinsburg. I believe that most of the
signs were spontaneously attached to the car.
I spent all of Friday evening, Jan. 27, 1967 (and many previous Friday
evenings too, because the East End trolleys did not run on weekends in
the months before abandonment) photographing and riding the last runs of
as many lines as possible. I finished up on a car that returned to Craft
Avenue before sunrise on Saturday the 28th, and thought that was the end
of East End trolley service, but then I heard that a 1700 would be giving
free rides in Wilkinsburg later that day. So, I got a few hours sleep,
then headed back to Wilkinsburg. The car ran around the downtown streets
again and again and again, and after I got my fill of photos I headed
home.
So, after all that discussion, I decided to look at the trivia photo.
Yes, thats the car (1767) that ran around downtown Wilkinsburg. Snow is
starting to fall in this picture, as it was in the late afternoon photos
that I took; the streets remained just wet, though. I suspect that some
fans or locals were at work on the crank on the route sign - I took about
30 slides of 1767 that day, and the front sign is different on nearly all
of the photos.
Be the way, one of the very last photos I took at Craft Avenue about 4AM
the morning of January 28 is of 1546 at the barn with a "Stadium-Forbes
Field" sign. It was dark out, but I shot a few flashbulbs to illuminate
the car. And just before that I took a photo of 1561 (in front of the
1546) also with a "Stadium-Forbes Field" sign. Maybe "Stadium-Forbes
Field" was the out-of-service sign used for the PCC transfer moves out of
Craft.
