Because the roof lights provided m-u-c-h b-e-t-t-e-r illumination
than the sealed beam headlights? Were you ever on a car at night when
the roof light was in use and you met another car? They turned off the
roof lights to pass each other. Not much illumination from the sealed
beam, even on high beam, as compared to the roof light!
