Right on, Ken. The problem with kids, especially the pre teen, (and the
majority of the teen set..then and now). is their lack of understanding
regarding the word "liability". Kids simply assume adults don't like
them playing around, or with, adult machinery.
I do believe it's that forbidden mystique that creates the challenge.
Getting hurt on Private Property isn't always necessarily a win for
owners of said property, so what that yard boss had to do, he did...and
cured me proper. Never repeated that type activity agaiin, nor did I
ever tell my parents about the episode. Didn't want to chance Dad's
taking up where the yard boss left off.
Several years later I found that Dad knew one of the maintenance
supervisors at Tunnel Carhouse who gave us both an authorized VIP tour
of the sheds and yard, including a ride on one of the last Jones
double-ended low floor cars (with me at the controls, and him
immediately in back of me with his hands atop mine), through the yard to
Palm Garden loop, and back to the main shed. I still have remnants of
the furrows at each side of my mouth from the huge grin implanted there
in 1951.
Thanks for the kind words, Jim. I have several other memories to share
on down the rails.
