Dave,
Regarding the John Froyd Collection of photos now on the internet, I can
offer the following additions and corrections to the locations.
Photo #3 Library car inbound at Montour Railroad crossing in Bethel
Park.
Photo #5 Narrowness of the street suggests Elsworth Avenue ... only
tentative.
Photo #11 Beech at Braddock in East Pittsburgh.
Photo #17 On the single track loop in the Highland section of
Pittsburgh.
Photo #19 see photo #47
Photo #24 on Smithfield St., downtown.
Photo #25 For starters, I'd look on Fifth Avenue in Oakland for those
buildings
Photo #27 Talbot St. Loop, Braddock
Photo #28 I try driving down Elsworth Avenue in Shadyside to see if any
of the buildings match.
Photo #29 Hamilton at Oakwood, City of Pittsburgh. Car is not going
into Tioga Loop but is running through to Jane Street in Wilkinsburg
Borough.
Photo #30 Avalon Loop
Photo #31 Suggest that you might be looking northeast on Lincoln from
Penn, East Liberty.
Photo #32 Probably in the Borough of West View.
Photo #33 Perrysville Avenue above Federal Street, City of Pittsburgh.
Photo #34 Keating Car House, Ross Township, Allegheny County
Photo #35 5th and Penn
Photo #36 - possibly Hay St. in the Borough of Wilkinsburg.
Photo #39 - possibly Braddock Avenue in East Pittsburgh. Note the PRR
bridge.
Photo #45 - East Carson Street at South 18th St., South Side. Check my
photo ID number, it may be wrong.
Photo #46 - East Carson Street, South Side. Photo probably within an
easy walk of #45.
Photo #47 - Both this and photo #19 were taken in the Borough of Mount
Oliver on the single track loop of route 44, which used Charles, Amanda,
Knox and Bausman streets.
Photo #48 - Emsworth loop probably
Photo #50 Fort Pitt Blvd. at Smithfield St.
Photo #52 I think this might be on Forbes Avenue looking out of Frick
Park toward Braddock Ave.
Photo #53 Arlington Avenue at Pennsylvania Railroad (just above Carson
Street.)_
Photo #54 Lincoln Loop? Probably better identified at loop, Lincoln
Ave. at city limits.
Photo #55 Liberty and Centre, Pittsburgh
Photo #56 Bunkerhill Street, a block from Highland Park. Certainly not
in, at, or near the Zoo.
Although it may be the closest car stop to the zoo.
Or was the writer taking aim at the
people who live in Highland?
Photo #61 Unknown location is Liberty Avenue between 10th and 11th.
Photo #62 Probably in front of Manchester Car House. Note the outbound
track into Beaver St.
allows a pullout to go to the end of the 18 Woods Run
line, or inbound as a 19 Western
Ave. car.
Photo #71 - Not at Knoxville. Knoxville is on top of the hill. This is
on Arlington Avenue at Carson St. See photo #53 which looks the other
way.
Photo #78 - Not anywhere near Brookline. Guess what! It's coming out
of South Hills Tunnel.
Photo #86 was taken on 6th St and Penn in June 1959 by Fred W.
Schneider, III and is used without permission.
Photo #89 was in Wilkinsburg Borough.
Photo #90 is captioned Hamilton Underpass. I think it is the
Pennsylvania Railroad mainline bridge over 5th Ave south of Hamilton
Street.
Photo #91 Route 98 Glassport never ran through Squirrel Hill. It might
be a barn pull-in after Glenwood Carhouse closed and the route was
transferred to Craft Avenue car house. The building architecture is
typical of Squirrel Hill.
Photo 94 was not taken on Federal Street. Try East North Avenue just
west of Sandusky, the layover point for route 22.
Photo #102 is entering McCartney St., inbound.
Photo #104. I've seen two spellings, the more common is Dookers
Hollow. At any rate, the bridge ends behind the car ... not the bridge
railings behind the car and simple highway guard rails beside the car.
Photo #107 is not on Cable Street. It is half way up Henderson Street.
Photo #117 -- the only possible single track is Brighton at California
Ave.
Photo #118 - The Woods Run car with the PRC wings decal is CHOICE.
Photo #121 is not at Drake Loop. It is at the temporary Drake Wye just
south of Walther Stop on the Washington Interurban. The wye was built
in March 1953, and in the next schedule change, headways on the
interurban were reduced to hourly with half hour cars only as far as
Drake Wye. The wye was out of service and the loop was being used at
least early in 1954.
Photo #124 is not at Canonsburgh. There is no such place. There is a
Canonsburg on the Washington interurban line but this picture was not
taken in Canonsburg. I'm 99 percent sure you are looking north across
Old Washington Road at County Line Siding. The 1940ish concrete highway
to Washington is just through the trees to the left.
Photo #127 is inbound on Ardmore Blvd just west of the Penn Lincoln
Parkway (called the Parkway East in today's lingo).
Photo #130 - S. 18th at Arlington.
Photo #134 - it is not easy to define East Liberty; it is simple a
neighborhood within the City of Pittsburgh. However, I think there
might be some agreement that route 76 skirted East Liberty to the east.
Photo #140 - Edgar Thompson Works, U. S. Steel Company, abbreviated ET
is in Braddock.
Photo #141 is at Yale Stop, West View.
Many of the color photographs were very nice Dave. They cover an era
which I ignored. I suspect most of the black and whites were taken by
Charles J. Dengler, a Pittsburgh letter carrier, who sometimes had
difficulty holding a camera level.
I would like your assurance that photo #86 will be deleted immediately
because, again, you have taken the liberty to publish my work without
first obtaining permission.
