1700 Series PCC's

Just a few minor points ... While 1600 interurban cars were probably used in
the 1950s principally in rush hours, they were originally base-service
vehicles on Washington. There was at least one 1600 in base service on the
final day of service to Washington.

All of the assignment sheets I have show Charleroi and Washington had no
1600s, so any that were used had to run out of Tunnel.

If I said 1690-1699 were fitted for Fineview, I apologize. I thought I said
some of the 1690s but we often find the typewriter produces something
totally different from what we thought we typed. I never saw a 1700 on
Arlington Avenue but that is not to say that they did not run there. Nor
did I ever see a 1700 on Mount Washington. But I did see 1707 on Fineview
on a fantrip which I organized in July 1958.

I would suspect that PCC assignments to routes were more often than not
simply a function of which cars were available in the barn. That would mean
that GE 1200s, GE 1500s, and GE 1700s might appear in the 1950s on 23, 25,
26,27, 28, 31, and 34 if for no other reason than they were assigned to
Ingram Car House. There would never be 1700s on routes 2 or 3 simply
because none were assigned to Millvale Car House, but they would have run
over East Ohio Street because they were delivered to Millvale.

As the number of Car Houses diminished, the variety available for any given
route increased. I must admit I was surprised when I saw Westinghouse cars
at Keating in the middle 1960s but those were the cars the PAT rostered.
