I can't speak for Pittsburgh, but many other systems used work equipment such as line
cars, differential dumps, etc. to tow disabled cars. Other systems had "wreckers"
specifically assigned to this duty. There were emergency cars that carried spare
trolley poles, shoes/wheels, electrical parts for on street repairs on some larger
systems.
I have a 1966 Roberta Hill photo of a line truck towing a disabled 1600 on Route 71
or73. I am not sure if I ever sent that one to Dave Mewhinney to post. Ken J.
