Car stops

These multiple cars signs were everywhere that more than one car could get
to a stop at the same time. I leafed through Volkner's color book and found
at least a dozen pictures with them, downtown, East Liberty, North Side, and
of course South Hills Junction. All the car stop signs were black text on
white background, no white on black. I also noticed on a couple pictures a
small orangeish sign that appeared to have only one letter. Does anyone
know what they were for?
While on the subject, in the early overhead shot of the tunnel --
http://www.voicenet.com/~dietrich/SHJ/oldover.htm -- there is a dark
rectangle over the crossing. It appears to be a sign hanging from the
overhead, does anyone know what was on it?

I remember "First Car", "Second Car" and "Third Car" rectangular signs at
the south
end of the Smithfield Street Bridge, north of Carson Street. Ken J.
