Who? Me? My dad's '57 had a six- stick...and he lived in Rochester at that time.
His '57 was a lemon so he bought a new '59 Impala (also 6- stick) before moving to
Milwaukee. And all that glass the '59 had was great for viewing all the overhead in
the South Hills and the East End when we visited Pittsburgh during the early to mid
sixties! No wonder I'm an overhead fan! I remember my mother commenting on the car
stop disks, etc. blowing in the wind (along with the hanging traffic signals.)
Where she grew up, car stop signs were mounted on poles at the curb. This makes me
wonder about settlements with motorists, etc. on those rare occasions when a sign
took a tumble into the traffic lanes.
I do have a vintage Plymouth similar to car Mr. Volkmer was driving in the early
sixties when he took those great shots....
...and I am going crazy trying to find all the landmarks Bob needs photos of in the
Roberta Hill Pittsburgh collection. More Route 40 pix seem to pop up all the time.
Ms. Hill had the pix sorted by routes...the family mixed them all up trying to sort
them by color and black and white. Ken J.
