Greetings!

Gleanings from *Trolley Fare* "Pittsburgh Points"
by Edward H. Lybarger and Lawrence. G. Lovejoy
			March--April--1979

". . . the recurring (and fun) matter of multiple derailments, which
have been prevalent of late. The Smithfield Street Bridge problem [of
derailments] seems to have been cured (knock on wood, rather than on the
bridge), but the problem now centers on trackage in areas not as well
drained as an open bridge. The most spectacular of these was the
derailment of the 'Trolley' (1730) outbound entering Edgebrook siding
during the PM rush on February 22. The car wiped out the northbound
headblock signal, and left the line closed for about six hours. It was
necessary to call out the crane car to rerail the 1730, but the crane
itself derailed three times getting to the scene. In the week that
followed, it was more of the same, as much of the line was inundated by
mud, arising from the deplorable lack of right-of-way drainage."
