Not to disparage Melbourne, but there were trams running from
Wynyard to Chatswood, Lane Cove, Cammeray (at one time,
Northbridge), Taronga Park, The Spit and Balmoral (through service
from Balmoral to Wynyard ceased after WW2.) I don't think that St.
Kilda's Luna Park ever boasted anything approaching this many
services. Even with the Sydney's rather long headways, there were
something like 22 trams passing in each direction in a typical mid-
day hour.
Melbourne is, of course, nonpareil for longevity.
Sydney's Luna Park is very intimately connected with railways,
having arisen on the site of the Milson's Point station yards. Briefly,
from electrification in 1927 until the opening of the bridge in 1932,
MU trains ran right through the heart of what are now its grounds.
Can't get much closer than that :-)
