Bob Rathke forwarded some pictures, which you can find at

Here are his comments on the pictures.

-----------------

This summer I commented on the rerouting of South Hills trolley lines
when the Smithfield St. Bridge was closed for repairs in the Fall of
1966. The trolleys ran on Ross to 2nd to 10th St. Bridge to Carson to
the tunnel at Smithfield; routing was the same both inbound and outbound.
The hot spot was Carson and 10th where the 53 Carrick cars turned
to/from Carson St. heading east. Here are three photos I took during
the rerouting, on September 18, 1966:

PAT1664-66.jpg - Shows 1664 (48 Arlington) outbound on 2nd Ave. under
the Blvd. of the Allies. The view is toward downtown, and a small
section of the Liberty Bridge approach span can be seen in the upper
right corner. Also note the PRR Panhandle Bridge (now PAT LRV) over 2nd
Ave. in the far right-center of the photo.

PAT1700a-66 - 1700 (36 Drake) is westbound on Carson, and turning into
the tunnel. Note the "Shapp" billboard for the Nov. election.

PAT1700b-66 - Here's the 1700 (36 Drake) outbound on 2nd Ave., under
the Blvd. of the Allies.
