About Those Tee Shirts

I may anger a few people with this one, but it has been a mystery to me for years.
What were those "South Hills Junction, 1904-1984" (or whatever the years were) all
about?
South Hills Junction is still with us. It did not cease to exist when the 42/38 was
shut down for rebuilding, when the "over the hill" line was closed for rebuilding,
nor has it ceased to exist due to the (temporary) closing of the Overbrook line.
It was almost as if some Pittsburgh fans were upset (and perhaps envious) of other
locales that had a true last run of electric rail service. "What? The system is
staying and is going to be rebuilt? But what about that final abandonment Dameron
promised us? We were cheated!!!" :-) Some of those sydnicated humor columnists like
Dave Barry could have had a field day with that one.
A fellow list member once accused we Pittsburgh fans as being the same as opera
lovers. I am inclined to agree with him.
The Tunnel Carhouse, PCCs, administration building and trolley pole operation are no
longer with us. But this is not the same as total abandonment. Nor is it the same as
a junction being removed because only one line still passes through the site. There
are currently two lines splitting at South Hills Junction. Not to confused with
"routes", there will be three once the Overbrook line is done. That sure sounds like
a junction to me. And if it is still known as South Hills Junction, then it did not
cease to exist sixteen years ago.
Let the counter attacks begin! :-) Ken J.
