Overbrook's been gone or suspended for so long, had also forgotten about 47-
"blue lines".
Even earlier, in very broad terms going back to amalgamation of 33 +/-
companies in early 1960s:
36/37/38/39/40 are Banksville Road corridor services
41/42/43/44/45 are West Liberty Ave. corridor services
46/47/48/49/50 are Saw Mill Run corridor services
It was an attempt to bring some sort of order out of a very messy and
cumbersome situation. For instance, with West Liberty routes, 41 is local
route to "Golden Triangle", 43 would be an express, and 42 is a "through" or
limited or ???? service. 44 would be a local bus, and 45 would be local
service in outlying community.
Thus there was 41A/41B/41C/41D local buses to "downtown".
42S eventually became light rail line through Beechview to South Hills
Village.
43B and 43C were to be the Bower Hill Express and Cedar Boulevard Express.
44A/B/C/D/E were shuttle routes in Mt. Lebanon area
45A was (or was to be) Heidelberg-Kane Hospital
For trivia buffs, route number index dated 11 May 1964 from PAT's Transit
Division lists following renumberings (which never took place):
42A Dormont-Mt Lebanon (rail)
42B Mt. Washington (rail)
42C Brookline (rail)
42D Library-Shannon (rail)
42E Drake-Shannon (rail)
42F Shannon (rail)
47A Carrick via Tunnel
47B Knoxville
47C Arlington
47D Beltzhoover
51A Carson St. to be operated (was this to be PRC 50?)
51H Carrick to be operated (was this to be PRC 53?)
55N Munhall-Lincoln Place to be operated (was this PRC 65)
Things change over time. Also not sure what "to be operated" implies.
Could be renumbering of rail routes or renumbering upon bus conversion?
Probably not important anyway.
Again, for what its worth, this is just some trivia from 1964 on how numbers
came to be what they are. It's from a PAT document which I guess I need to
forward to the PTM archives.
