Don Galt replied with information from reprinted 1876 Allegheny Co., atlas,
but publishers were very inconsiderate - they should have waited a few
months due to following taken from 1931 history of Pittsburgh:
"West Liberty Borough: This borough was incorporated 7 Mar 1876 from
western part of Lower St. Clair, Saw Mill Run being nearly identical with
eastern and northern bounaries. The village proper is a small hamlet on the
old Pittsburgh and Washington Road, but the adjacents of Mt. Washington and
the country on the line of the Castle Shannon Railroad are comparatively
thickly settled. Fetterman Post Office has existed since June 1876. Mary
Beltzhoover is the post mistress."
Map of Borough of West Liberty shows it bounded by Pittsburgh and
Beltzhoover to north, Lower St. Clair to east (along alignment of Edgebrook
Ave.) Baldwin and Scott Townships to south, and Union Township to west
(including residence of E. Neeld - ?? of 43 fame???) Borough included
Brookline, east part of Beechview, and P&CS right of way South Hills Jct. to
vic. Oak Trestle. Even Tunnel Car House might be located in what was once
West Liberty Borough.
Atlas of City of Pittsburgh, dtd 1911, has been reprinted. Shows West
Liberty in vicinity of Pioneer Ave. near Cape May, but by then had been
incorporated into City of Pittsburgh.
However, if I can stray a bit, quick scan of 1911 maps show streetcar tracks
on Euclid and St. Clair between Highland Park and East Liberty; Murray Ave.
is prw on what later became Brown's Hill Road; Ravine St. listed with
streetcar tracks (38/39/42) at Tunnel Carhouse; north side track connection
9th St. to 16th St. south of PRR using Lacock/Madison/Progress. Rest pretty
much as would be expected years later. Surprised, though, that 21 Fineview
was missing. As Jim and Derrick commented about map makers........
Don't suppose there is any interest in short history of public
transportation in Pittsburgh written by Pitts. Ry. president for 1931
history????
