Greetings!
I agree with your assessment completely, Bob, i.e.
1)--Factory Fresh Paint vs:
2)--Faded factory paint.
But I also believe that we are relying more on memories and personal
prejudices concerning what is factory fresh.
The picture of 1734 on the postcard is a *Factory-Fresh-Paint* scheme
of the car as newly delivered to PRCo - photo by John Baxter - very long
time employee of PRCo, friend of PTM. ORIGINAL Kodachrome resides with
PTM and Ed Lybarger indicates that this is in very good condition. This
photo shows a very definite orange bias to the red, NOT deep dark red.
Also, the photo on the bottom of page 118 *PA Trolleys In Color--The
Pgh. Region* by Volkmer shows 1799 on the flat car at Millvale being
delivered to PRCo and that shows a definite orange bias to the color.
And the video *PCC Trilogy* which was made from Kodak color 16mm film
from the early 1940s reveals a definite orange bias in the red on 1200s,
tens, 11s, and even 1400s with MANY shots of 12s as brand new equipment
as well as 14s.
The above 3-photographic references are available to all on the list
for inspection.
NONE of the photographic evidence of *Factory-Fresh-Paint* on brand
new PRCo PCC cars reveals a deep dark red. Our memories may reveal
that, but I am not going to rely on anyones memory of 51+ years ago,
thank you!!:>)
This information is to help to identify Prototype-original paint - it
has no reflection on choices for colors for models. In most aspects of
modelling, what we are creating is the *look-and-fell* (to borrow some
computer terminology) and colors, details, textures are sometimes
enhanced and or changed to give that effect. These decisions are also
made to reflect personal preferences and personal preferences are not
necessarily prototypical.

The PTM Library has a 4x5 Kodachrome transparency of that view of 1734.
It
hasn't faded. But remember that the color appearance can be affected by
the
lighting and by reflections, etc.
