TR was heading to a country club to give a speech. He was in a horse drawn carriage. A
streetcar carrying officials of the transit company and other movers & shakers was trying
to get to the location first. The streetcar was speeding. The road curved to the left as
the streetcar tracks continued straight to become a side of the road operation. The
carriage cut in front of the streetcar 275 feet before the "normal" location of the
crossing. The streetcar rammed the carriage. President Roosevelt received an injury to
his leg the bothered him for the rest of his life. The carriage driver was seriously
injured and a Secret Service agent was killed.
The press crucified the motorman and he wound up in jail for six months after paying a
$500 fine.
