Of interest to all I recall a friend of mine that ran PCCs in Boston
[somewhat removed from Pittsburg ] whose pole came off the wire at
Copley Sta. in the subway . When he went to put the pole back on , the
entire shoe was missing ! All he had was a small Y shaped pole at the
top. He put this on the wire and rolled slowly into the station hitting
every cross span. The station inspecter or on duty starter came over
and said if he could proceed to Park st,. Sta. he could park the car on
the stub track there and be out of the way . He even volunteered to help
him out and ride the rear door to put the pole on if it did come off. It
did about 20 times but they finally got to the stub track. Behind them
were at least 25 cars that followed them all the way at an excrutiating
10 miles an hour and this wasnt even the rush hour !
