"Only One Stop of Street Cars Instead of Two"
...
>From time immemoriable almost cars have been stopping on both sides of
Smithfield street on Sixth avenue, and making similar double stops at
other corners downtown. The object of the stop on the first, or near side,
was only to get orders to go ahead, but hundred of passengers did not
appreciate this and endeavoured to alight, with the result, if they were
not stopped by the conductor, the start of the car would throw them from
their feet, endangering life or limb.
...
All this is to be changed. The nearside stop will be the only one made,
except in a few instances where there are special reasons for the
exception.
...
Notices to be Posted.
On and after February 1 cars will stop on signal to take on and let off
passengers on the near side of all cross or interesecting streets, except
at the following named points:
Fifth avenue and Market street
Fifth avenue and Grant street
Liberty and Sixth streets
Liberty and Seventh streets

General Superintendent
--
The Fifth at Grant exception is for the Grant's Hill grade.
Fifth at Market is due to the West End cars, which have their terminal on
the near side of Market
Nothing listed about the Liberty exceptions.
