Greetings!
PRCo Fares McKeesport & Routes, 1930s
"A FARE SITUATION. Back in the early thirty's there was a
rather novel set up of the fares on the Pittsburgh Railways streetcars
in the McKeesport area."
"There were four lines that ran through McKeesport, #56--McKeesport
via Second Ave, #68--McKeesport via Duquesne,
#98--McKeesport/Wilmerding and #99--/glassport/Evans Avenue. Route
56 arrived in McKeesport via Lincoln Place, Dravosburg and Tenth Ward,
arriving from the old Dravosburg Bridge to John Street on Atlantic Ave.
then through Tenth Ward on Atlantic Avenue, Erie Street, The Old
Viaduct, The Fifth Avenue Bridge, out Fifth Avenue to several blocks
beyond Pirl Street to the McKeesport Car Barn. The reverse was just
the same except that it operated down Rebecca Street instead of Erie.
Route 68 was the same then as in recent years. Route 98 ran down
Atlantic Avenue from John Street and followed the routing of the 56 as
far as the Car Barn, it then kept on out Fifth Avenue to State Road, and
then on out to Wilmerding via East McKeesport. Route 99 ran from the
top of Evans Avenue at Bailey to Fifth Avenue, through Downtown and
across the Old Fifth Ave. Bridge out West Fifth to Glassport. Routes
56 and 68 used single end cars while Routes 98 and 99 used double end
cars. The 98 cars changed ends at a crossover on Atlantic near John
Street and went into the 'Y' at the PRR Station in Wilmerding and back
out, thus keeping the same end frontward. The 99 cars had a piece of
single track at the top of Evans Ave. where they changed ends, they did
the same in Glassport near the Clairton Bridge."
"The fares were as follows: On the 56 if you were coming from Lincoln
Pl. or beyond the fare was one check from Lincoln Pl. to Sinclair St.
and either a nickel or a three cent ticket from Sinclair St. to the Car
Barn. If you boarded the car in Tenth Ward the fare was still a check,
but if you got on board at Market St. and Fifth Ward the fare was still
a check, but if you got on board at Market St. and Fifth Ave. the fare
was wither a nickel or three cent ticket. On the return trip the Fare
East of Sinclair was a nickel or a ticket and this was good up to Market
St. From Sinclair to Lincoln Place the fare was a check, even if you
were only going to Tenth Ward. On Route 68 the fare from
Sinclair to Duquesne was a check, but only a nickel or ticket if you
were only going to the Duquesne Bridge. The reverse was just the
same. On route 98 the fare from John Street in Tenth Ward
to State Road was a nickel, but if you boarded at Market Street or
beyond the fare was a ticket. From State Road to Wilmerding the fare
was a car check. The reverse was the same. On Route 99
the fare was either a nickel or a ticket from Evans Avenue to Fifth and
market. The fare beyond Market was a car check, The reverse run was
the same."
"THUS in McKeesport through the Tenth Ward there were two fares on
Atlantic, either a check or a nickel--depending on which car you got.
On West Fifth Avenue there was only a check. On Fifth Avenue there was
either a nickel or a ticket from Market on either 98 or 99 and a nickel
or ticket on the 56 from Sinclair Street. So you had checks, nickels,
or tickets on Fifth Avenue depending on which car you were on and where
you had boarded the car."
"At that time checks were three for a quarter and of course had to be
purchased on the car from the operator. The three cent ticket could
not be purchased on the cars but had to be bought from the various
stores adjacent to the stops that would handle them and they sold three
for ten cents or thirty-three for a dollar."
And PRCo invented the Greek Alphabet --
or was it the Chinese Alphabet.......
Japanese Alphabet.......
Alphabet SOUP?!?!(:->)
