A NEW REASON TO UPGRADE TRACKAGE

Tramways & Urban Transit (1/2001) has revealed a new reason to fix up old tracks - Calcutta is reported to be ready to re-do 24 kilometers of the 68-km system improving safety (no, really?) and "eliminating breeding crevices for mosquito larvae to combat malaria." Now, aren't you all glad that you live in a moderate climate (and I include Melbourne in that, even if it is the hot season)! I've seen video of Calcutta's rails - the Russians are well kept up by comparison.
