It was 41 years ago October 15 when Pittsburgh Railways PCC car 1038,
                 operating on
route 87 (Ardmore) in the Strip District, smashed a
tractor-trailer
                 broadside, injuring 20
passengers. Others were severely jolted. Police
said the crash was so
                 violent that they
were amazed that no one was killed. The trolley
was knocked off its
                 tracks by the
impact of the crash at Penn Avenue and 27th Street
and was carried by its
                 own momen-
tum into a side street. Despite a badly smashed
foot, the operator
                 escaped with minor
injuries. Almost every window in 1038 was broken.
Inspector Albert
                 Jones said that
the truck, loaded with freight, was crossing Penn
Avenue on 27th Street
                 when the
crash occurred shortly before noon. As a result,
1038 was put on the
                 next scrap list.
Pittsburgh Railways scrapped 45 PCC cars during the
summer of 1959.
