The answer to your question Fred as to why the
companys split their bids between GE & Westinghouse was the fact that
most of them did not want to get on the bad side of either company due
to spare parts aquisitions. If they left out one for the other, they
probably would have a problem getting the offended company to supply
needed parts on a fast track order. Mr. Danny Cohen , who just retired
from Boston's MBTA as their rebuilding boss for their PCC fleet for the
Mattapan - Ashmont line where 12 cars soldier on [and a longtime
Seashore Trolley Museum member] reiterated to me the fact that the main
controller on Westinghouse cars could be fixed with new parts whereas
the GE controller was not fixable and had to be replaced completely. An
expensive procedure !
