.......from the May--1954 *ERA Headlights* -- and I quote:::
"Pittsburgh Rys. added two sidings to the single track stretches on its
former interurban line outbound of South Hills Jct. on February 27 to
improve operation to and from Shannon, Library and Drake. The new
passing points are McKinley Park (between Boggs and Bon Air) and
Edgebrook (between Bon Air and Smith), reducing the length of the 5
single track stretches between Boggs and Oak to one minute each.
Operation over two high trestles and along a steep hilside makes the
double tracking of the line there an economic impossibility, although
peak hour service, even without the old interurbans, required that some
relief to the accumulation of cars at red signals to be provided.
Another passing track is being constructed near Santa Barbara on the old
Washington line between Washington Jct. and Brookside to reduce the
length of a 7-minute one track stretch there."
