Unless you are talking about the high desert such as the Mojave, where I
live. WRM's climate is a bit more forgiving than that of Las Vegas. While
ties and utility poles here aren't rotted by excessive moisture, the intense
heat, high UV and ultra dry air can reduce the life of treated wood
considerably. I suspect this will be a headache for the museum group that
plans to operate on the former UP Las Vegas-Henderson-Boulder City line.

The heat and UV in this part of the country also makes short order of wiring,
interior materials and paint pigment. OERM has to deal with cars fading
almost as quickly as they can paint them. And some of their really neat stuff
isn't under cover, though John Smatlak is doing his best to get the cars
wrapped up and out of the sun.
