Good question, Roger.
Suspect it can be viewed from several angles.
One extreme would be to develop a 'core collection' and scrap everything
else.
The other extreme would be to try to restore everything to operating
condition. This would require much in the way of human and financial
resources.
One place in between would be to build a display barn or barns and use it
for 'chicken coops' restored only to a 'stuffed and mounted' condition.
This might be a quick and dirty partial solution.
Another might be to ask is their is a need for a national collection and to
what extent it should be at Seashore. Can some items go elsewhere and would
they be taken care of??? (NOTE: just expressing an option. It's Seashore's
collection, and it's Seashore's decision as to what they want to do with
their collection and how they want to apply their financial and human
resources)
My off hand comment might be to suggest building a LARGE garage, stuffing
dozen or so car bodies inside, putting a time lock on the door with a sign -
'not to be opened until 2030'. That is, their plate is full for now, and
some items could be stabilized and left as problems for the next generation.
Because, once something is scrapped, it is gone forever. At least an
original template.
So Roger, that's a good question for you Seashore members.
John
