Sometimes I think the public truly became accustomed to risks around
them.  The accident only happened when someone that didn't live in the
neighborhood backed behind the moving car.

Dormont doesn't make a good example because they backed onto private
right-of-way.  Drake wye was the same.  So was St. Louis Public
Service's Clayton wye (but I remember they pulled in and backed out
immediately before someone had a chance to get in the way).  But the
Wilmerding wye at the end of route 87 ... where the motorman had to back
a car in beside the Pennsylvania Railroad station and, at shift change,
into a crowd of men coming up the staircase from the tunnel under the
railroad ... well, the thought of it just scares me. 

But it scares me because I'm trying to put it into today's perspective. 
We really cannot do that, can we.  We need to think like they thought in
the past ... that you are responsible for some of your own stupid
actions.
