Fred Schneider is younger than I am. In my time, U.S. prices have
risen 14 times over, not that different from Europe. My father was a
civil engineer and was paid $ 3,000 in 1935 or '36. Tody, he wold earn
at least $ 48,000, probaly much more. Transit fares averaged twelve
rides for a dollar but now one ride costs $ 1.10 or more in some places.
SEPTA has gone from two for 15 cents to $ 2. Postage stamps have gone
from two cents to 34 cents, soon 37 cents.
We bought our first brand new house in Bethel Park, Penna. for $
9,500. Today, they do not make them that small. but it would probably
cost $ 150,000. Politicians love inflation as it makes it less painful
to pay off borrowed money because the lender does not get his purchasing
power back.
