Good Morning!

ALL the following is from Peter Ehrlich, SF-Muni Historical Trolleycar
Operator and afficionado. The first posting indicates a JTC PCC
look--alike for Fog-City; the second mentions how both Pgh._&_Philly
PCCs were spotted side by side; and the third posting indicates the
method to choose the variety of paint schemes used in SF.

Subject: Good news on PCC 2133/1064

Hi, gang!

Today I learned some great news! GM Michael Burns has given the order to
Muni Heavy Overhaul to do something toward getting ex-Philadelphia PCC 2133
(Muni # 1064) ready for service. Today 2133 was being worked on over the
pits in Geneva Shops. Tomorrow it will be brought over to Metro Center
for reconditioning. It will be sand blasted and get a thorough
electrical/mechanical workover.

Since it has a blue SEPTA interior, 2133 will go into the paint shop when
ready and emerge as a copy of the only Johnstown Traction Co. PCC painted
something other than traction orange. It will wear blue and white, worn
by car 401 which was painted up to represent the 50s-era "Civil Defense"
program.

1064 probably won't get a backup controller installed. It has St. Louis
B-3 trucks--the only ex-Philly car to have these. It first ran in San
Francisco in 1990 and was used to develop the specs for the rebuilding of
the 14 other ex-Philadelphia cars and to a lesser extent, the 3
"Torpedoes". It languished for years while MSR did some work to get
wheelchair seats (from ex-SamTrans buses) and other work, and then those
who worked on the car at Mint Yard got really discouraged when Muni did
nothing further.

Now that 2133/1064 is getting a new lease on life, expect this "pioneer"
PCC to go in service in about two months. We really need the car for
service!

Subject: At Last! Philadelphia and Pittsburgh come together!

Hi, gang!

For only a couple of days, it was possible to see both major Pennsylvania
cities--Philadelphia and Pittsburgh--come together!

It happened the other day on Muni in San Francisco, when shop forces
placed ex-Pittsburgh PCC 4009 next to ex-Philadelphia PCC 2133 in Geneva
Yard. Although they look like hell now, eventually, both cars will see
service on Muni--maybe even this year!

Choosing the SF--PCC Paint Schemes

The way the paint schemes were chosen was this: Using colors already in
Muni's paint shop palette, some in Muni's Planning and Community Affairs
selected cities whose cars would give close matches to the palette.
However, one car's paint scheme was allowed to be chosen by the fans, and
for that Muni turned to MSR who then conducted a poll for a buck a vote.
The money went for a good cause--MSR's ongoing restoration efforts. The
overwhelming number of votes were cast for Brooklyn, since that was the
first system to put in service a group of production cars (Pittsburgh
Railways car 100 was the absolutely first car in service, preceding
Brooklyn by a matter of days).
