and in the text which followed, one found references
to "Northern Liberties", "East Liberty", "West
Liberty", and "Liberty Township".

I get the feeling that the word "liberty" is being
used in a sense different from, for example, "Give me
liberty or give me death", or "Statue of Liberty".

So, what is the definition of "liberty" as in
"Northern Liberties". The plural has my curiosity
running in high gear.

(Yeah, I know, not very intimately related to street
cars, but the question arose here, and I've always
wondered about Northern Liberties ever since I ran
into it/them in the name of a railroad.)
