 Good Morning!

The following information was posted by Mr. Dennis M. Linsky
elsewhere. Dennis gleans this from periodicals of the time line
InterurbansNewsletters and Headlights and their predecessors.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Morning, Trolley Folks:

It was 50 years ago on New Years' Day when Pittsburgh Railways was
under brand new ownership. Much news was happening.
  * Route 9 shuttle was abandoned
  * Buses were now labeled "Pittsburgh Railways"
  * Routes 17, 20, and 81 went bus.
  * The Herron Hill carhouse was closed and turned over to the Way
Department.
  * Route 85-Bedford ran from Craft Avenue
  * Route 22-Crosstown ran from the Manchester barn.
  * Route 37-Castle Shannon ran only during rush hours, but with the
Washington and Charleroi cars still running, route 37 was given 15-minute
service.
  * The Pennsylvania State Highway Department has forced PRCo. to give up
theMillvale carbarn, placing the future of routes 2 and 3 in great doubt.
    Very Sincerely,

    Dennis M. Linsky

The statement about the 37-line is a little confusing. Beforfe
thisdate, Charleroi and Washington cars left Pgh. in tandem on the hour and
half-hour (they arrived the same way!) and ran Express or Limited (help
please, Ed) until Castle Shannon with local cars filling in this far.
IF this is the date when the signs on the interurbans displayed
SHANNON--CHARLEROI and SHANNON--WASHINGTON, then these cars operated
locally through Shannon. What is meant by the 15-minute headway above - is
that the rush hour service for the 37-Shannon? Twould seem more like
mid-day!
